A fast, mobile-first website for a Tennessee barber school, built to answer every question a prospective student has and turn visits into enrolment enquiries.

Project Overview

Skillz Barber Academy is a barber school in Portland, Tennessee. They started in 2016 as a barbershop and grew into a training academy, and they came to us needing a website that could do one job properly: turn people who are considering a career change into enrolment enquiries.

This is small business website design in its most practical form. The academy is not selling online and does not need a shopping cart or a login — it needs a fast, credible site that answers every question a prospective student has before they pick up the phone.

Answering the questions that stop people enrolling

Most people looking at barber school are weighing up a real financial and time commitment, and they drop out of the decision when they cannot find an answer. So the page is built around the objections rather than around the business:

  • Can I even get in? Enrolment requirements are stated plainly — two years of high school if currently enrolled, and no diploma or GED required. That single line removes the biggest reason people assume they are not eligible.
  • What do I actually get? The 1500 training hours, the full barber kit, the textbook, workbook, kit bag, vest and student ID are all listed as concrete items rather than a vague promise.
  • What happens after? The mission section covers job placement — the academy reaches out to shops and has availability in its own shops.
  • What will it cost me? Student service pricing is published openly instead of hidden behind an enquiry.

A gallery that does the selling

For a trade school, proof is physical. The photo gallery carries the ribbon cutting, community events and students of the month — the real storefront on S Broadway, real classes, real people.

That section does more convincing than any amount of copy, so it was given its own place in the navigation rather than being buried at the bottom of the page.

Built for speed, not for a CMS

The site is hand-built in HTML, CSS and JavaScript with a PHP form handler, running on Hostinger. There is no CMS framework loading megabytes of plugins to render what is fundamentally a well-structured brochure site.

That decision is why the pages load quickly on a phone — which matters, because this audience is overwhelmingly searching on mobile. The responsive layout adapts from the desktop navigation down to a single-column mobile view without a separate mobile site.

Set up to be found

The page titles and meta descriptions target how people actually search — barber training in Portland, TN — rather than a generic industry phrase. Address, phone number and opening hours are on the page as text so local search can read them.

That groundwork is what makes later SEO work worth paying for; without it, a local business is invisible to exactly the people nearby who are looking for it.

Turning visits into enquiries

Every section ends somewhere useful. The phone number sits in the header on every screen, "Enroll Today" repeats through the page, and an enquiry form at the foot captures anyone not ready to call.

If you run a local business and your website is not bringing you enquiries, tell us what you are working with and we will come back with a fixed price and a realistic timeline.
